What Parents Need to Know About Sudden Cardiac Arrest - Greater Austin Moms

Moms do everything in their power to protect their families and keep them healthy. Fall is here and with kids back in school and involved in extracurricular activities and with sports ramping up, it’s important to be informed about a serious public health crisis that can affect anyone, anywhere, at any time: Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA).

October is SCA awareness month and a great opportunity for parents to better understand their child’s risks of experiencing SCA and how to safeguard against this medical emergency. Unfortunately, SCA is not rare.

What Parents Need to Know: SCA

SCA is a life-threatening emergency medical condition where the heart unexpectedly stops beating. It impacts people of all ages, genders, and demographic backgrounds, and, if not treated immediately, will lead to death. Many parents are not aware that SCA can happen to seemingly healthy individuals, including children and teenagers even in the absence of prior heart conditions—let’s get the word out!

SCA Among Youth is Not Rare

1 in 300 kids have an undetected heart condition that puts them at an elevated risk for SCA. Each year, thousands of youth experience SCA, often with fatal outcomes, yet awareness of this condition has generally remained low.

Most parents don’t know that SCA is:

  • The leading cause of death on school campuses
  • The #1 cause of death for student athletes
  • Claiming the lives of up to 23,000 students annually in the United States alone
  • Expected to happen on 1 in every 25 high school campuses each year

Knowing that 1 in 300 children have an unknown heart condition that will cause them to drop unexpectedly in cardiac arrest at any given moment is scary. Parents who learn how to recognize SCA, perform CPR, and access an AED can jump in and take quick action to save a life when SCA strikes. With just a little bit of increased awareness and preparation, many sudden cardiac deaths can be prevented.

Your Child’s Safety

Parents can keep children’s hearts safe by ensuring that all of the places they gather and spend time are equipped with necessary lifesaving resources, including people who are trained to recognize the warning signs of SCA, perform CPR, and have quick, easy access to AEDs.
