Summer in Central Texas means plenty of sunshine, backyard BBQs, and splash pad adventures! But with the strong Texas sun, it’s extra important to keep our little ones safe. Did you know that just a few serious sunburns can increase your child’s risk of skin cancer later in life? Yikes!
So, before you head out to your favorite park or pool, make sure to take a look at these 5 easy tips to stay sun-smart all summer long.
1. Suit Up for Sun Protection
Think of clothing as your first line of defense.
- Cover Up: Slip on lightweight, long-sleeved shirts or cover-ups. Look for clothes with a tight weave or those labeled with an Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF), as these offer better protection.
- Hat Smart: Grab a hat with a three-inch brim all around to shield their face, ears, and the back of their neck.
- Shady Specs: Don’t forget sunglasses! Look for labels that say “UV400” or “100% UV Protection” to ensure they block harmful UV rays.
2. Plan Your Play Around the Sun
The sun’s rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Try to schedule outdoor activities for earlier mornings or late afternoons when the sun is less intense. Whenever you’re outside, make sure to scout out shaded areas and take regular breaks from direct sunlight to keep everyone comfortable and cool.

3. Apply and Reapply Sunscreen Religiously
Sunscreen isn’t a one-and-done solution.
- Pre-Exposure Application: Apply sunscreen 15-30 minutes before going outside so it has time to absorb into the skin.
- Frequent Reapplication: Reapply every two hours—and immediately after swimming or sweating, even if the product is labeled “water-resistant.” It’s easy to lose track of time when you’re having fun, so set a timer on your phone or watch as a helpful reminder!

4. Pick the Perfect Sunscreen
Choosing the right sunscreen is key:
- Broad Spectrum is Best: Select a sunscreen that says “broad spectrum” to protect against both UVB and UVA rays.
- SPF Savvy: Opt for a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 (and up to SPF 50 for extra protection).
- Gentle Ingredients: For sensitive areas like the nose, cheeks, ears, and shoulders, choose sunscreens with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. These ingredients are gentle and provide strong physical protection.
- For Babies Under Six Months: Prioritize keeping infants in the shade or covered with protective clothing. If direct sun exposure is unavoidable, apply a small amount of sunscreen to tiny areas like the face and backs of hands.
- For Children Over Six Months: Apply sunscreen to all exposed areas, being careful around the eyes. If your child has sensitive skin, stick with formulas containing titanium dioxide or zinc oxide.
5. Hydrate Like a Hero
All that running, jumping, and splashing can quickly lead to dehydration for both kids and adults. Keep water bottles handy and encourage frequent sips. For extra credit, try fun, fruit-infused water to make hydration even more appealing!
