Talk about a fun night out! Celtic Axe is providing moms (and other adults, too!) a fun outlet where they can engage in some axe throwing! We’re learning more about Celtic Axe and one of their Axe Masters, Brittany, in today’s Small Business Saturday. Be sure to check that promo code at the bottom too!
Hi Brittany! Can you tell us about yourself?
My name is Brittany and I am a resident Axe Master at Celtic Axe in Austin, Texas. I started my position at the first location, which opened here in October 2021 and have loved it ever since! We currently have two locations in Austin! We opened our first location at the large in/outdoor venue, which we love, in south Austin at Armadillo Den and just recently opened our new location at The Brewtorium (which is kid-friendly all hours) in Central Austin in June of 2022.
Can you tell us what makes owning a business in South Austin so great?
South and Central Austin is a hub of activity with an endless list of bars and restaurants. Between both locations there are only a few places that offer unique entertainment for adults. Axe throwing has become pretty popular in several places, especially here in Austin and is a growing community that we enjoy being a part of!
What sets y’all apart from other axe companies?
We differentiate ourselves from other axe throwing places by leading the way with safety! Unlike most axe throwing venues, we only use wooden-handled axes and no-bounce borders with end grain targets. Features like end grain targets and wooden-handled axes don’t bounce back when/if a customer has miss-thrown. Austin has such a unique community mentality and we love teaching all to perfect their axe throwing skills!
What do you offer at Celtic Axe?
Celtic Axe specializes in a unique fun, safe, and fast-growing entertainment experience that offers Axe throwing games to adults and minors 13 and up (with a parent signed waiver). We provide you with a tailored Axe Master who will teach you techniques to get you sticking the board, provide you with tons of fun axe throwing games and even fun trick shots with a few different types of axes! Some of our most popular events are team building with Austin businesses. Weddings, bachelor\bachelorette parties, birthdays and date nights have also been a big part of our business! Moms night with some local groups I am a part of has also been becoming a hit! We have a growing number of walk-in 30 minute sessions to keep us busy as well.
Where do you see Celtic Axe in five years?
We started our business about five years ago in Oregon City, Oregon and have really taken off. We are excited to see our Austin locations flourishing as well and can’t wait to see where Austin takes us! We love who we have partnered with in Armadillo Den and The Brewtorium. Currently we are open Thursday – Sunday at both locations and hope to get some amazing leagues going and maybe even open up another day of the week to the public. We would love to see our company grow and maybe open up some new locations here in Austin!
Any struggles along the way since opening?
We have had some struggles along the way like most small businesses. When we wanted to venture out for possible new locations, it was during the pandemic. We chose Austin and partnered with Armadillo Den because we were confident that the city and state would keep businesses opened and safe and we absolutely love the unique venue this place had to offer!
One of my favorite small owned businesses in Austin is Hearts and Robots Hair Studio, which has rotating art by local artists and photographers amidst the barber chairs used by their amazing stylists! They also are and encourage socially conscious business practices by decorating the salon with 90% upcycled furniture and equipment.
As a woman and single mother myself, I became a part of several single mom/parent groups here in Austin. I love to get out and meet up with some other local mom friends and new faces with and without our kiddos! Axe throwing had never really crossed my mind prior to becoming an Axe Master. Nowadays I have held several mom meetups to have a drink, enjoy some food and have them come learn to throw axes with me! I love the confidence boost of the first stick, the sense of achievement when a thrower becomes really good and pride myself in helping all learn how to not only throw axes, but to throw them well! It’s always fun to let your hair down with some girls and get out some aggression! The beauty of Celtic Axe throwing is you can also bring your teens to throw with and bond over honing in on your techniques! (Armadillo Den’s kid friendly throwing hours are on Thursday from 4-6 p.m. and The Brewtorium kid friendly throwing hours are from open to close!).
