Several articles about moms deserving a vacation sans kids, girl’s trips and the like have made their way onto my Facebook feed over the last several years. Google it, you’ll be swimming in proof that you should take some time away for you… as if you needed any more evidence than you can produce from your daily grind.
It has been a whoppin’ 3 years since my last girlfriends’ trip and I’ve been pining for another, but… I was ready to lay out my excuses then realized you’d see through them all- you’ve got the same ones! Excuses cast aside, a girlfriend reached out a couple of weeks ago and suggested a Mom’s Day Out poolside while the kids got their education on and within minutes I had booked my Resort Pass for The Fairmont Austin.
We talked about everything- from books we’re reading to sex- without being interrupted, needed by anyone or the danger of me setting my kitchen on fire (true story). We drank mojitos and indulged in poolside food service. We swam in the salt water pool and lounged, drinks in hand in the jacuzzi.
Then I went and got in the pickup line at the kid’s school feeling like me, but a saner version, and I realized I can pinch pennies somewhere to make this happen once a month! I’m pretty sure that making time for a little luxury with girlfriends oftener would be much more beneficial to my soul, my friendships and my family than a big vacation once a year (or every 3, in my case).
Take a day-cation guilt-free, mommas, and don’t hide it from the kids because there are things they can learn from observation and open communication. Here are just a few I thought of:
1. Adults have friendships and need playdates too. You are modeling healthy adult relationships, so they can have them one day too.
2. We can spend time away from our family members and love each other better when we are together again.
3. Everybody has needs (including mom!) and its not selfish to advocate for our self-care.
The question that begs to be asked: where will you go?! Here are some places I tracked down for your next Mom’s Day-cation in Austin:
The Fairmont Austin – “The 7th floor terrace features an elegant, seasonally heated pool with zero entry for chaise lounging in the water, 13 exclusive cabanas and 1 grand cabana. Please note pool access is for hotel guests, as well as those who purchase a Resort Pass.”
The W Austin– “Non-hotel guests may access the pool Mondays-Fridays with a WET Deck Day Pass. Pool access is complimentary after 5pm Mondays – Fridays for happy hour and sunset swims.”
Lake House Spa – book massages or facials and spend time between services at the heated indoor or outdoor pools.
South Congress Hotel- “Non-hotel guests can access the pool & bar with daily passes, Monday – Thursday, 11am – 5pm.”
Hotel Van Zandt- “Sip your favorite cocktail or draft beer poolside and take in stunning views of Lady Bird Lake.” Day pass includes, poolside food and drink service by Geraldines, sunscreen, wifi.
Experience Life on Lake Travis– Airbnb could be the place to find your next Moms’ Day-cation locale. Book a house with a pool or search “Experiences” for a brewery tour or a boat tour on the lake.
