Get ready to mark your calendars because BookSpring Fest: A Read Aloud Celebration is coming to town on Saturday, May 3rd, from 12 PM to 6 PM! That’s right, our favorite event in South Austin in May is back and better than ever!
This amazing local non-profit works tirelessly year-round to combat what is called “book deserts” right here in Texas. These are geographic areas where access to an adequate number and variety of high-quality reading materials is severely limited or nonexistent. This scarcity directly impacts children’s literacy development, as consistent exposure to books at home is a crucial factor in building strong reading skills, expanding vocabulary, and fostering a lifelong love of learning. The lack of readily available books in these communities creates a significant barrier to early literacy, hindering academic success and overall well-being.
BookSpring actively addresses this critical issue by working year-round to ensure that children in these book deserts have access to engaging and age-appropriate books in their own homes, along with programs that encourage and support their reading journeys.

- A Petting Zoo with a Llama! Yes, you read that right! My kids are already buzzing with excitement about meeting a llama!
- Creative Fun: Get ready for face painting and balloon making – the perfect way to bring out your little one’s imagination.
- Carnival Games & Prizes: Who doesn’t love a good old-fashioned carnival game? Get ready to win some fun prizes!
- FREE Books for Families: This is the heart of it all! BookSpring will be giving away free books to families, helping to build those home libraries and spark a lifelong love of reading.
- Delicious FREE Treats: Come hungry! We’re talking tamales from Tamale Addiction, coffee from Bennu Coffee, yummy popcorn from Cornucopia Popcorn, treats from Quacks Bakery, and more! Seriously, is there anything better than free food and fun?
- Adult Beverages: For the grown-ups, Austin Beerworks and Canteen Spirits will be on hand with some refreshing adult beverages. Cheers to supporting a great cause!
- Storybook Kid’s Costume Contest: Calling all little bookworms! Encourage your kids to dress up as their favorite storybook character for a chance to win a special prize! I can’t wait to see all the creative costumes.
