Melissa Keller, the founder of the Abigail E. Keller foundation, and her husband Travis have been married for over 20 years, and together they shared the incredible journey of raising their daughter, Abigail “Abbey” Keller. Abbey was born with complex medical needs and was truly the light of our lives. Though her time here was short, her impact was immeasurable — she taught us about unconditional love, faith, and the true meaning of resilience.
Welcome Melissa! Tell us a little bit about yourself and your background.
I am the Founder and President of The Abigail E. Keller Foundation, created in honor of our daughter, Abbey. The Foundation’s mission is to support families of medically fragile children by providing direct financial assistance, care baskets, birthday celebrations, and most importantly, hope. We’ve already directly helped more than 165 families and continue to expand our impact each year.
Our dream project – Abbey House – will be Texas’ first pediatric respite and hospice home. Which will be a a warm, loving environment where families can bring their children and they can take time to rest, recharge, and even spend time with other siblings. While also serving as a tranquil and peaceful place to take their child to spend their last days in a private, comfortable setting that is specifically for children. Letting families cherish this time and create lasting memories.
What sets us apart is that everything we do is deeply personal. Every program we create is inspired by Abbey and the experiences we had as a family navigating a world built for the “typical.” We know firsthand what it means to need a break, a helping hand, and a community that truly understands.
Our mission is to Give Moms the Gift of Time– What are your best time saving tips/resources as a mom?
I’ve learned that grace and prioritization are everything. You can’t do it all – and that’s okay. I try to focus on what truly matters that day, and I’ve learned to let go of the rest. I also live by my calendar and make sure to take quiet moments every morning for reflection and prayer to reset my mind and spirit.
What are some of the biggest challenges you have faced in your business?
Building a nonprofit from the ground up as a mom who has walked through deep personal loss has been both healing and humbling. The challenge is often balancing the emotional side of our mission with the business side – ensuring sustainability, fundraising, and growth while staying grounded in why we started in the first place.
It also takes a lot of people to make it happen, and I’ve learned that surrounding yourself with genuine, mission-driven people is absolutely crucial. The right team and community make all the difference in continuing and furthering this work from the heart.
Where do you see your business in the next 5 years?
In five years, I see Abbey House built and serving families across Texas. It will be a place where children with complex medical needs can find joy and comfort, and parents can breathe knowing they are not alone. Beyond that, I see the Foundation expanding, creating a ripple of compassion and care in serving more families.
If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why and how long would you stay?
I’d love to visit Italy – the mix of history, beauty, and warmth of the culture speaks to my heart. I’d stay long enough to truly experience the slower pace, savor the food, and soak in every moment.
What’s something interesting about yourself or something others may not know about you?
I’m a bit of a motorsports enthusiast! Most people are surprised to learn how much I love racing – from F1 to MotoGP to Le Mans. There’s something about the precision, teamwork, and adrenaline that inspires me both personally and professionally.
